Lewis Hamilton puts in a stunning lap to take pole in what was a wet qualifying session at the Redbull Ring. Throughout qualifying, it looked like it would be close between Bottas, Verstappen, and Hamilton fighting for the top honors, but in the end, the final lap from Lewis Hamilton ensured none would take away the pole from him.

Q1

Sebastian Vettel was the first out of the garage and to queue at the pit exit, and along with him, almost every car queued up to ensure they get in a lap before the rain becomes heavier. Romain Grosjean was the last driver out of the pits but then straight skidded off into the gravel. He returned to the pits with a problem and that was the end of his session.

As cars set out and put in laps, the places were being traded between the drivers, fighting to ensure they were in the top 15 so as to progress into Q2. As the times fell, most drivers except for seven(Mercedes, Mclaren, Redbull drivers, and Ricciardo) pitted for another new set of wets to ensure they get in good times to progress ahead.

Geroge Russel put in some good times and made good use of his new tires to ensure his spot in Q2, an appearance that Williams is making for the first time since the 2018 season.

As the session was coming to an end, and drivers pushing to the limit to move to the next session, Antonio Giovanazzi had a slip coming out of turn 9 and crashed his Alfa Romeo, though he was able to get going again, he had to stop his cars from creating more debris and thus triggering the red flag for the session.

This meant Perez, Raikkakon, and Latifi could not improve their lap times and were knocked out of the session.

Q2

The top spot was being traded between Verstappen and Hamilton as they were over half a second clear of the third-placed Norris.

Like the last time out here at the Redbull Ring, we saw one of the Ferraris eliminated and the other barely making it into Q3. Though this time it was the other way around as Leclerc was eliminated and Vettel made it in.

An impressive Geroge Russel put his Williams at P12 with the penalty for Leclerc he will be starting at P11 while the Racing point of Lance stroll was at P13. Danil Kvyat at P14 while his teammate made it into Q3. Magnessun of Hass could not put in enough as he stayed at P15, and as we headed down into Q3 for a pretty good showdown.

Q3

Max Verstappen was the first to wait at the pit exit for the start of Q3 to make the best use of track as the condition started to worsen. As the session started Lewis Hamilton took provisional pole, with Max at P2. Bottas and Albon with identical times were at P3 and P4 at the start of the session.

As the cars started doing their final runs, Ocon put in a brilliant lap that put him in P5, Ricciardo who just improved his time a bit to relegate the Ferrari of Vettel to P10. Alex Albon was P4 at one point could not improve his times much and saw him relegate to P7 as Gasly of AlphaTauri took P8.

Lando Norris who was impressive up until this point out in a disappointing lap as he had quite a bit of aquaplaning and could not get a lap together. He had to settle for P6, with his penalty will see him relegated to P9. Bottas who was close to Max and Lewis started to have brake issues that saw him take P4 and Sainz make the most of the opportunity to take his best ever qualifying position at P3.

And at the final laps we were in for a showdown as Max started his final run, putting the fastest time in sector 1 and a pretty good sector 2, just as he was coming around to complete the lap at turn 8 and turn 9 he lost grip that sent his Redbull off the track. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton who was already seven-tenths up, put in purple sectors to extend his lead by another half a second and cementing his pole position.
